Exercises

Start: Friday, 24.02.2012

The first seminar class will take place in the computer labs HG E 26.1 and HG E 26.3. You will get a short introduction to R (see tutorial) and environments to work with R.

All other seminar classes will take place on Fridays from 10-12 in HG G 3.

There will be no seminar class on 06.04.2012 (Good Friday).

Exercises will be based on the free open-source statistics and graphics software R, downloadable from the ETH CRAN mirror for Mac, Linux or Windows.

Here is the link to a very short introduction to R for Unix/Linux also describing the environment on which you will be working during the exam. We will work through this tutorial during the first seminar class.

Emphasis will be put on applied problems. Active participation in the exercises is strongly recommended.

All R packages necessary to solve the exercises are installed in the computer labs in the E floor of the ETH main building. Students which prefer working with their own laptop or PC will need to download packages themselves. R packages can be downloaded from CRAN (where you got R), ETH mirror at http://cran.ch.r-project.org/. Follow the link "Packages" on the left side. There, you can also find documentation on how to install the packages.

Exercises

Please take a look at this organizational sheet, containing important information about the exercises and how they should be handed in.

The new exercise sheet will always be uploaded on the Wednesday preceding the corresponding preliminary discussion session.

Questions and Comments

You can always ask questions to the lecturer and tutors during the class and the exercise session. If you want to send us an email, please send it to this address: compstat@stat.math.ethz.ch

Solutions

The solutions (PDF files) will be sent weekly to the students enrolled for this course.

Miscellanea

Lecture attestation (Testat):
You do not have to hand in your solution to the exercises during the semester. However, active participation in the exercises is strongly recommended to all. To get the credits for this class, you have to take the written exam during the examination session.

If you want us to correct your exercise, please print out your results and hand them in to one of the tutors during the exercise session. R code should not be printed out, but uploaded to the LEMUREN interface. We will not correct solutions submitted by email.

Any corrected exercise sheets that have not been picked up during the seminar class will be kept until 12th of June 2012 in the room HG J68 in the tray "Computational Statistics / Corrected Exercises". After the indicated deadline they will be thrown away.

Evaluation of the exercises (for doctoral students only):

Every exercise submitted (on time!) will be corrected by your assistants. For every reasonable solution to a subexercise you get one point. In order to recieve the Testat you need 40 ore more points from the exercises. (The amount of points obtained will be stated on your corrected sheet).
