fts underneath is a c++ policy template based class.
The underlying storage can be pretty much anything as long as you
implement the public api.
here is the backend for R:
http://github.com/armstrtw/r.tslib.backend/tree/master
the backend could just as easily be a python object allocator, a
dataframe, or a flat file.
