There is a Pentium optimised BLAS around (from the ASCI project),see

 Another poster has mentioned ATLAS. 

However, an optimised BLAS makes disappointing little difference to R,
partly because we don't spend that much time in BLAS and partly because we
only use the lowest-level routines.
