There is a superb package called ATLAS (Automatically Tuned Linear
Algebra Subroutines) which is available from 

http://www.netlib.org/atlas

A word of warning, building this runs an extensive series of tests on
your machine to configure ATLAS properly for your processor and and
cache.  The slower the machine, the longer the tests will take to
complete.  But the performance boost is incredible.  Large
matrix-matrix computations are 8-10 time faster than with the reference
blas from netlib.
