I think it depends on how the remote host handles the terminal device, 
pseudo-terminals, etc.  For example, I've seen cases where remote 
iESS[SAS] does not work, but remote ess-sas-interactive does.  They both 
rely on the same internals so the iESS stuff works, but the remote host 
can't communicate with it.  There was a long thread on this in the early 
naughties that you might be able to find.
