Configuration Problem

texi2html is part of newer tex distributions, such teTeX.
It is needed to produe the HTML version of the documentation.
Since you're using emacs, I hope you can work with the info documentation
more easilty instead.

However, in order to use ESS, it's not necessary to do "make",
just add the necessary  (load ...) or (require ..) to your ~/.emacs
as indicated in the INSTALL / README file.
