I'd be glad to, but my knowledge of autotools and friends is also limited.
AFAIK these tools run against current versions of these files coming 'from
the system' (and/or the developer's machine) rather than the actual sources
one ships as those latter ones could get stale.  Should be fine to replace
this.  Let me know...

One other thing:  we still have the open bug report at 
    http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=371058
about help(foo, package=bar) not opening a new buffer.  Is that actually
fixable, or shall I just close it 'as that is the way things are' ?
