Title:
Modeling in Kinetic Gas Theory: PDE's Meet Statistics

Abstract:
Kinetic gas theory describes the flow of gases on the
basis of the statistical distribution of particle
velocities. The governing equation is the Boltzmann
equation, a high-dimensional integro-differential
equation. Approximative models for Boltzmann's equation
reduce the complexity of the statistic description
by considering partial differential equations for fluid
variables like density, velocity and temperature. The
task is to find statistical models that provide
partial differential equations with desirable
mathematical and physical properties.
