[R-meta] foreign characters in R

Dear Philippe,

Thank you very much – this makes total sense theoretically to me. I am not working with R directly, but several R scripts come with the software when I download it. I am not quite sure, how OpenMeta and R really “communicate” and therefore, I don`t know whether I should open OpenMeta and RStudio simultaneously and then just type the commands in the R console. The OpenMeta File has the ending “.oma”.

Do you have any suggestions on how to proceed.

Thanks a lot!

Dear Teresa,

Please keep r-sig-meta in the loop.

I am assuming that you are not working directly with R (or Rstudio). Instead you are working with wrapper (OpenMeta) or Shinny app that work with R in the background. If you are working with R, just change the UTF setting or even with the reading function can be done.

So, please try to follow the instruction of this link https://www.py4u.net/discuss/858888 to change your encoding (to UFT-8) default options in R, then OpenMeta can work with R in a different default state.Does it makes sense for you?

Dear Philippe,

Thank you very much for the helpful links. I try to attach a screenshot – there is indeed an R console window underneath the forest plots I create, but I am not able to change the settings in there. I would like to display Ylmaz as Yılmaz.

Dear Teresa,

Usually, this type of problem are solved when you use the right encoding for your language (Turkish is UTF-8) . Please take a look of this: https://support.rstudio.com/hc/en-us/articles/200532197-Character-Encoding-in-the-RStudio-IDE. Not sure how to work this with an external wrapper software as OpenMeta seems to work (I don't have previous experience in OpenMeta, so I taking your word).

May be, you can change the link function between OpenMeta and R, or the default encoding of R. I think this also can be helpful to understand how to change the default options from the "root": https://www.py4u.net/discuss/858888

Hello everyone,

As I have not been very lucky finding a strategy to solve my issue with entering author names, I thought I would give it a try and ask here.

I am working with the software OpenMeta Analyst (methods are implemented in R programming language) and everything analysis-rated has work out perfectly so far, but now I have an issue with entering author names that contain foreign characters such as the turkish c (ç). I am able to enter the names, but the letters are dropped in the respective forest plots.

Perhaps someone has worked with the software before and has advice for me. I am quite familiar with R and I know that there are some tricks how to make R accept foreign characters, but I am having trouble handling this in OpenMeta Analyst.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks a lot and best wishes,
Teresa
