In my (earlier) system the fix has been to find the Helvetica fonts in Fontbook.app and remove the corrupted (often duplicated) ones which you can identify as being the ones that display as blanks.

Thanks a lot David, your advice was the good one.
I found that I had Arial fonts in both /Library/Fonts and
/Users/myhome/Library/Fonts. Removing the one from myhome did solve
the issue.
