thanks, that is a good observation. Some 3rd party libs require pkg-config and in fact some of them (including cairo) actually need tweaked .pc files to support static linking properly plus some stubs for system libraries. Ill see if I can package the CRAN setup into an easy bundle tomorrow which that I can put in the libs as well.
