[R-SIG-Mac] loading packages hangs Mac, error in loading proxy package

Greetings,

I'm finding it difficult to load various packages from the CRAN to my 
Mac.  I've tried different mirror sites and that doesn't seem to help.  
Typically, I get the pinwheel of death and have to force quit.  What I 
seem to notice in each case is a message that says "error: package 
"proxy" could not be loaded".  I'm not sure that is relevant to the 
problem, but any suggestions would be appreciated.
