That's what I did (or rather the csh equivalent): it is just needed 
for the XML configure stage.

Yes, it can be a pain (I build it for Windows), but so much else 
relies on it.

No, Mac OS X's linker hardcodes the paths of dependent libraries, and 
in any case R adds /usr/local/lib to the dylib library path ahead of 
the system locations.

Nothing special about R: you set LD_LIBRARY_PATH or DYLIB_LIBRARY_PATH 
depending on what you are doing (and which OS).
