[R-SIG-Mac] 2.8.0 compiled and installed on mac os x 10.3 - parallel install with 2.7.2 how to make R run R 2.8.0

I used
./configure --without-aqua
make
sudo make install

everything worked fine-  2.8.0 is installed fine, but I don't know how
to get it to work with R ...
this works and launches 2.7.2 -- do I simply make a new symbolic link
to the new installation or... ?
also I have EMACS and would like it to work with x11 I can set the
display with Sys.setenv(DISPLAY=":0.0") to get x11 up an running.  How
can I get this to work without having to type this in every time?
.Rprofile?  I have tried adding the previous line, but I can not get
it to work.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think all this lacks is ibook G4 256 RAM
os x 10.3.9
