[R-SIG-Mac] Trouble installing g77 3.4.2 and tcltk packages in 2.1.1

I have installed the latest and greatest if R for Mac OSX.  Thanks for a
great job.

Now the nuances.  After I installed R.pkg in my G5 with MacOS 10.3.9, I
tried to install g77.pkg (g77 3.4.2) and tcltk.pkg.  The installer for these
packages reported "there were errors in the installation" "try installing
again".  I did as instructed to NO avail.  Does anyone have any clue of why
this is happening?

Also, when running R.app, I get in the console the following error when
clicking the R-Help option from menu bar.  The help menu appears and in the
console:

Error in iconv(x, from, to, as.character(sub)) :
    unsupported conversion
