The position description is below:

About Us

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home of three Nobel laureates, is an independent, nonprofit research institution dedicated to the development and advancement of biomedical research to eliminate cancer and other potentially fatal diseases. Recognized internationally for its pioneering work in bone-marrow transplantation, the Centers five scientific divisions collaborate to form a unique environment for conducting basic and applied science. The Hutchinson Center, in collaboration with its clinical and research partners, the University of Washington and Seattle Childrens, is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Pacific Northwest. Join us and make a difference!

Job Summary:

The successful applicant will integrate a dynamic team of biostatisticians, bioinformaticians, computer scientists, and programmers lead by Dr. Raphael Gottardo to support the development of software packages to analyze and integrate high throughput data from next generation immunological assays (e.g. Fluidigm, CyTOF, next generation sequencing). The position will involve the development of efficient packages for the analysis of high-throughput data, including computational algorithms development and implementation of creative solutions for large volume data management and processing. The candidate will have access to state of the art assay data generated by cutting edge projects in infectious disease and vaccine development, as well as a state of the art computing infrastructure including brand new CPU and GPU clusters

Scope of Responsibilities:

The scientific programmer will independently determine programmatic approaches to problems and develop algorithms and software programs that are computationally efficient, effective, and well documented for public release. The successful applicant will be expected to not only implement state-of-the art computational algorithms but also contribute to the development of novel algorithms relevant to the analysis of high throughput assays.

Responsibilities (May include some or all of the following):

1.	Analysis:
a. Identify current computational bottlenecks in data analysis for specific assays
b. Communicate with statisticians, laboratory scientists, clinicians, programmers and information systems staff to understand and develop requirements and specifications for analysis datasets and analysis programs.
c. Develop novel computational algorithms that outperform state-of-the art algorithms
d. Create, document and validate programs, data, data pipelines, data distribution plans, and data storage.
e. Develop custom graphical user interfaces (GUIs) for the tools developed.

2. Data management and high performance computing :
a.	Implement creative solutions for large volume data management challenges
  b. Create high performance computing solutions for processing large data sets

Minimum Qualifications:

Because the applicants will be expected to 1) develop novel computational algorithms for processing large immunological datasets, 2) implement creative solutions for large volume data management challenges, 3) create high performance computing solutions for processing large data sets, an MS degree (or higher) in computer science, bioinformatics, statistics, biostatistics or related field is required.
- Proficient in C/C++ a must
- Proficient in some scripting language such as R/Perl/Python
- Experience with relational databases, database schema design, SQL and/or netCDF / HDF5 file formats
- Familiarity with bioinformatics workflows would help
- Familiarity with high performance computing using openmpi, openmp, and GPUs
- Must be organized and detail-oriented, with good oral and written communication skills
