[R-sig-Geo] On simultaneous autoregressive spatial models

Thank you, Dr. Bivand. I'm modeling species distributions and need to
"thin" my data to reduce the effect of spatial autocorrelation. I'm using
both continuous (climate, etc.) and categorical (soil, etc.) variables. The
idea would be to fit simultaneous autoregressive models to the occurrence
data, use the resulting autoregressive coefficients to estimate the degrees
of freedom in the dataset, and consider them as the number of spatially
independent occurrences.
