You haven't given us much to go on. What happened when you tried
building the package? What error messages did you get? What version of
R are you using? What version of the ncdf dll's do you have (are there
even 64bit versions of these? all I see at
ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/netcdf/contrib/ are 32 bit...)

Finally, if linux is not an option (why not?) can you use a Mac
instead (there are binary versions of the ncdf4 package for OSX)?
