[R-sig-Geo] degAxis() does not print degree symbol

I found a solution. I post it here although I acknowledge that it
belongs to the r-help list. But since I opened a ticket here ....
Following an old post (link below) I uninstalled the package
ttf-symbol-replacement-wine and rebooted. The test suggested by Edzer
was fine then.
