Which platform are you using?

If you can install rgdal, I think you will find that it reads GeoTIFFs 
nicely. You can either read larger images "by hand" using the GDAL 
interface more directly, or use readGDAL() as a wrapper returning a 
SpatialGridDataFrame object directly.
