Beatrix,

   Was this before SER?  If so, I also attended the afternoon session. 
It seems to me that the propensity score is more or less an 
encapsulation.  The "score" itself seemed to be the predicted 
probability adjusted for various covariates.

   Honestly, if I were to consider using this technique, it would be by 
request of a journal or regulator agency.
