It does not work on a Windows shared drive:

> setwd("//vboxsrv/duchamp")

[1] "\\\\vboxsrv/duchamp"

whereas:

> decompose_path("foo.tgz")
                  dirname filename extension
foo.tgz //vboxsrv/duchamp      foo       tgz
