It does not work on a Windows shared drive:

> setwd("//vboxsrv/duchamp")
> getwd()
[1] "\\\\vboxsrv/duchamp"

whereas:

                  dirname filename extension
foo.tgz //vboxsrv/duchamp      foo       tgz
