I use Subversion and the excellent collaborative R-forge site:

http://r-forge.r-project.org

The R project itself uses Subversion, but it is just at home with
smaller applications like a simple R package.

And using R-forge, you don't need to set all the infrastructure up
yourself, you just need a subversion client on your machine to check
out/in files/changes etc. You get extra goodies from R-forge like
nightly builds of your packages etc which is also very handy.
