[R] space between plots

ok, I see: I was confused because the box
goes a bit beyond the axes:
layout(matrix(c(1,3,2,4),ncol=2))
par(mar=c(0, 4, 4, 0) + 0.0)
plot(1,yaxt="n")
par(mar=c(0, 0, 4, 3) + 0.0)
plot(2,bty="n",yaxt="n")

...and I'm not
plotting the box in my graphic.
