[R] space between plots

When I try this:
layout(matrix(c(1,3,2,4),ncol=2))
par(mar=c(0, 4, 4, 0) + 0.0)
plot(1)
par(mar=c(0, 0, 4, 3) + 0.0)
plot(2)
plot(3)
plot(4)
the upper left and right are butted together. Exactly what 'space'
are you talking about?
