My mistake. 

For the 1000x1000 problem on my system, I got the following:

32-bit
[1] 23.37  0.03 23.41  0.00  0.00
64-bit
[1] 80.99  0.02 81.03  0.00  0.00

So it looks like I've still got some work to do.  Thanks for the suggestions.
