[R] ./configure on SunOS does not run to completion

Well, that's interesting, but mine does run to completion.

configure:28052: checking for xmkmf
configure:28070: found /usr/openwin/bin/xmkmf
configure:28082: result: /usr/openwin/bin/xmkmf

(SunOS 5.8, but I have that file in that location also on a 5.9 system)

I think you need to look at *your* openwin installation.
