Well, specifically it means that the ar command cannot be found.
There's supposed to be one in /usr/ccs/bin/ar or, if you install the
GNU binutils, in /usr/local/bin/ar (usually). First thing to check is
whether /usr/ccs/bin is in your $PATH.
