[R] unexpected reloc type in dyn.load

That's interesting.  I also built my R with kgcc, then tried to install
akima, but it doesn't work.

What bothers me is that all the libraries included in the R distribution
work, but any contributed libraries that I've installed subsequently fail. 
It seems that R INSTALL is doing something different than the original make
did, but all the compiler and loader options I can see are identical.

I'll keep playing with options and see if I can get something that works.

What I've tried so far that hasn't worked:

--Using the kgcc compiler.

--Updating the gcc and g77 compilers to 2.96-63 (Rawhide) versions.

--Updating glibc to 2.1.94-3.

Next, I'll try downdating the compilers to 2.95.2.
