Dear John,
I use a very similar setup, R 1.0.0, ESS 5.0 and GNU Emacs 20.3.1 under
SuSE Linux 6.2. Everything works perfectly.
I would suggest using the rpms for ESS 5.1 for SuSE 6.3, located in the
binaries section of CRAN. These rpms, along with those for R, are made by
Albrecht Gebhardt. The url is
http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/R/CRAN/bin/linux/suse/6.3/RPMS/i386/ess/
I found Albrecht's rpms always work flawlessly, and I have been using them
for a while. Unless you have strong feelings about where your files should
be located, I suggest you use his rpms for R as well.
Let me know how it goes.
Sincerely, Faheem Mitha.
