[R] ESS Compilation error

but below I see that it's 5.1.9  which is somewhat outdated.

The latest version of ESS 5.1.13 does *include* the ess.info files

I may mean that your makeinfo is somewhat outdated.
The latest GNU texinfo 4.0 has a makeinfo which is required also for making
R's info manuals (in R' doc/manual/).
Get texinfo/texinfo-4.0.tar.gz from any GNU mirror.
