My two cents on the issue of GUIs and graphics:
There are good GUIs and bad GUIs. What would be nice in R would be
the ability to manipulate a plot on the screen to get the visual parts
right, and then to save the resulting template in a variable to use as
a starting point for a series of programmed changes.
The R model of a plot as an unerasable ink drawing on a piece of paper
makes graphs harder to draw: It's hard to draw a graph that shows the
current status in a simulation, for instance, because you might not
know the appropriate scale at the start.
It's possible to keep most of the good aspects of plots in R, but also
to allow interactive editing. <Ad> My column in the latest Chance
magazine talks about some of this.</Ad>
