Coplot is designed for n_variables > 2, like 

z <- rnorm(100)
x <- rnorm(100)
y <- x * rnorm(100,z) + rnorm(100)
coplot(y ~x | z , panel=panel.smooth)

if you visualize 2 variables a simple scatterplot might be all
right: plot(x,y) ???

but: I'm quite sure I've misunderstood your intention...
