We (Fritz and I) have changed the setup of this scheme a bit, now using
"dated" file names upon Fritz' request.  
We've always kept the 10 latest versions and always only the .tar.gz ones.
I think the new scheme does the same also for the bz2 ones 
(which can be considered a waste of disk space and I could well change back).

The transition phase (from one to the other scheme) lasts 10 days and we
are still in midst of it.  I saw no real reason for doing the transition
manually at once when it happens all automatically over the 10 days period.

The real new thing about it is that we now also snapshot the "R-ng"
[aka `R (next|new) generation'].  
However, dear "R-devel"ers please note that "R-ng" currently has nothing
interesting in it AFAIK and in fact is not even tracking "R-patched" or
"R-devel" ...
