I don't know anything about GESMES, and have only looked into NetCDF a
little bit. Of course there are several ``standards'' for exchanging
data, and XML is one of them which looks promising to us.

One nice thing about XML is that more and more applications start
supporting it, i.e., have parsers for XML.  And you don't need any
special software for writing XML, as it is plain text -> you can
create XML files without the need to link any shared libs etc.

That XML can be easily extended is already part of the name ...
