This may be my problem. As I recall, one of the Linux install questions
is about X11 development. I didn't think of compiling R as X11
development, and I don't do anything else that would require me to
install this.

Perhaps this is relevant to the r-help question about X11 not working
with a recent SuSe install? Unfortunately I deleted that message.
