That's a good idea!

There is no compelling reason: the rather brutal error is because I was
concerned to duplicate the procedure in apply().  Hence I used get()
directly, rather than checking for existence first.  But I agree that a
NULL return would be more flexible.  I'd be happy to rewrite.
