[ESS] ess-mode: Wrong type argument: syntax-table-p, nil

Dear Leon,
As Tony said below, ess-mode is the wrapper for several functions, so
the fact that it put the ESS menubar up is just that it got that far
before the code broke.  ess-mode should not be used, and hence I have
made it non-interactive in the next release.  (i.e. you won't be able
to type M-x ess-mode.)  The preferred behaviour is just to use things
like M-x R-mode if the buffer name is not appropriate (e.g. .R).
