[ESS] ess-mode: Wrong type argument: syntax-table-p, nil

It seems impossible for me to configure a nice fontset for emacs 2.1.x
so I gave up. So far emacs 22 rocks. I'm using emacs cvs with xft and
use Bitstream mono.
