Interesting!  I was misinformed.  OK, the fix is easy.  On
around line 59 of essd-sta.el add the following line and
re-instantiate the variable STA-customize-alist:
    (inferior-ess-font-lock-keywords . ess-STA-mode-font-lock-keywords)
