Hello everyone

I'd forgotten about emacs's ability to do this! Well I've been
fiddling with
M-x modify-face for a few minutes now, and set the
show-paren-mismatch-face
to fg green and bg purple (emacs 21.3.50).

When I type "[(]" I get a warning "mismatched parentheses" but no
highlighting;
I was expecting the mismatching round and square brackets to be
green/purple.
What am I doing wrong here? What have I forgotten?
