font locking .txt files

Hi all,
this is my first (intentional) post to this list,
so please forgive me if it's trivial.

I would like to have myfile.txt fontyfied as the initial scratch file.
I'm quite unexpert in the use of R,
and having different colurs for after keys like #, and " helps me a lot
in decoding what I'm writing. Particularly the day after.
Also very useful is the automatic indentation.

I know by reading "Getting started with xemacs"
that this could be done activating the font lock mode for each window.
In fact it works for the scratch window as well as for the R window,
but it seems not to work for the myfile.txt window.

Now I realize that there is a new #myfile.txt# together with the previous
myfile.txt
and it has different colours, actually only black and green after the key ".
Moreover, the automatic indentation do not works.

Eventually, how can I have all those useful features of *scratch* in my own
files?
