Xemacs/ESS on Mac OS X

Maybe you should delete the *.elc files in 
      /sw/lib/xemacs/site-lisp/ess-5.1.19/lisp/

(the above ``Invalid byte code'' would mean that the compiled
emacs-lisp files (the *.elc ones) where compiled with an
incompatible (to your Xemacs) version of emacs.
