ess 5.1.20 seems to have disappeared from ess.stat.wisc.edu

You aren't missing anything.  It can be found on a link from 

  http://software.biostat.washington.edu/statsoft/ess/

The "home page" has moved, after many many years (and thanks) to the wisconsin folk, and it hasn't been mirrored back yet.  I'm not sure when that will happen, either.
