First guess is that you have an incomplete line that looks like the
first line below, with an open parenthesis fairly far to the right.

abc <- def(abc, fsdalkjdsklj, sdakfdsajkdsljf, (ajkads,
                                                next.line),
           abcdef)

The normal behavior of the next line is to align with the
most recent open parenthesis.  So all of the rest of your examples
are behaving correctly.

Second guess is that you modified one of the editing style parameters in
either ~/.emacs (or ~/_emacs) or /emacs/emacs-20.7/site-list/site-start.el
or /emacs/ess-5.18/lisp/ess-site.el
