inferior-ess-exit-command

For some reason, my installation of R (V1.0.0) has its default behavior
on quit set to q(save=="no"). This is annoying because I keep losing
stuff
that I want to preserve in .RData. I haven't found a way to make R
behave;
so I've been trying to get ess (V5.1.8) to help out by setting
inferior-ess-exit-command
to q(save="ask"), but so far I've had no success. Every exhortation
I've put
in my .emacs file to redefine that variable has been ignored, which
means that
exiting with C-c C-q leaves all I've done unsaved. So I need some hints
from
the experts.
   Thanks, Pierre
