help, R and ESS (fwd)

I am using ESS 5.1.11, Emacs 20.5 and R version 1.0.0 under Redhat
Linux 6.1.

I have noticed some curious behavior.

I start Emacs, and start R with M-x R.

>From the > prompt I enter something like 

    > ?attach

emacs then displays the help information, but it also displays an
error:

WRONG TYPE ARGUMENT: PROCESSP, NIL

Can you explain whay the error is generated and what I need to do to
fix it?
