Using emacs/R/ESS under Windows

I am using R for the computing in the Statistics classes that I
teach.  I do not use Windows much myself but several of my students
do.  I would like to encourage them to use ESS.

Could someone please indicate
 - which version of emacs to use?  where to obtain it?
 - which version of ess to use? (ESS-5.1.11.zip?)
 - any special setup instructions I should point my students to
