Your solution will cause trouble later.  The intent of the standard order of
site-lisp first is that you can override standard definitions by putting your
version in site-lisp.

My guess is that there is some other conflict in your setup.  I would be surprised if something
as fundamental to the ESS designers as font-lock were responsible for whatever errors you
are seeing.  Send some error messages and context to ess-bugs and we will see if we can
spot the problem.  Use M-x ess-submit-bug-report to collect the machine information.

The version of ESS you are using is about 2 or three years old.
