The Pirbright Institute, an institute of the Biotechnology and Biological
Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), is a unique national centre that works
to enhance the UK capability to contain, control, and eliminate viral
diseases of animals through its highly innovative fundamental and applied
bioscience. We thereby support the competitiveness of UK livestock and
poultry producers, and improve the quality of life of both animals and
people.

The Pirbright Institute is currently situated on two campuses, Pirbright
Laboratory in Surrey and Compton Laboratory in Berkshire. The process of
transferring Compton Laboratory activities to Pirbright is underway.

The Centre for Integrative Biology consists of bioinformaticians,
mathematical biologists, epidemiologists and statisticians who support and
develop the viral diseases-led research of the Institute. The Centre has a
dual role, carrying out its own research, while also providing support to
scientists involved in quantitative biology. Members collaborate closely
with laboratory and field scientists and strengthen the design and analysis
of in vivo and in vitro studies on host-pathogen interactions and of
national and international surveillance and epidemiological activities at
the Institute. The post holder will develop a programme of research in
bioinformatics in collaboration with Institute scientists. He or she will
also help maintain and develop the bioinformatics infrastructure and
provide general bioinformatics support and advice and will report directly
to the Head of Bioinformatics.

Main duties and responsibilities

*developing a programme of research in bioinformatics

*helping maintain and develop the bioinformatics infrastructure

*developing/participating in the development of bioinformatics applications
and analysis pipelines

*providing bioinformatics support and training to staff and students

*liaising with bioinformatics groups at other BBSRC institutes and
elsewhere

*interacting with other members of the Institute to establish collaborative
research links

*playing a full role in the research life of the Institute and representing
it externally as required

*Ensure compliance with Disease Security Regulations

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

*A PhD or equivalent in a relevant branch of biosciences or computer
sciences

*Good understanding of concepts and principles of molecular genetics /
biology

*Experience of research in a recognised R&D environment

*A good record of peer-reviewed publications

*Proficiency with a programming language (e.g. Perl or Python)

*Familiarity with bioinformatics software

*Proficiency in R or another statistical language

*Firm understanding of relational database concepts and familiarity with an
SQL DBMS

*Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills, including
with scientists working in other disciplines

*Excellent time management skills and the ability to work well under
pressure

*Capacity to travel extensively within the UK, with long hours and
occasional overnight stays

BENEFITS OF THE POST

The post is graded at a Band E, and is an Open Ended (Indefinite) contract
with funding until 31 March 2017. The starting salary is £33,780 - £37,534,
depending on qualifications and experience. The post-holder is also
entitled to a £3,000 Pirbright Institute Allowance. This is a Full Time
role of 37 hour week, Monday to Friday.

On appointment, you are eligible to join the Research Council's Pension
Scheme. You have the choice of either:

*An attractive, career average, defined benefit pension scheme. The bulk of
the cost of this scheme is met by the employer: or

*A partnership pension with a contribution from the employer. Our basic
contribution is based on your age, and we pay this regardless of whether
you choose to contribute anything. You do not have to contribute if you do
not wish to but, if you do, we will also match your contributions up to an
additional 3% of pay.

Annual leave is 27 days on appointment plus 10.5 days public and privilege
holidays. The Institute has a subsidised child care scheme, staff
restaurant and free parking.
